Military Service

In the wake of 9/11, he heeded the call to national service and entered Officer Training School in the US Air Force.  He graduated with the prestigious General James ‘Chappie’ Award, before being commissioned an airborne intelligence officer.   Zach would go on to deploy three times, flying 700 combat hours over Iraq and Afghanistan.  During a particularly intense coalition operation, Zach led a team of airborne crypto-linguists to provide kinetic targeting and life-saving intelligence alerts to Special Forces to break 2,000+ insurgents’ stronghold in east Afghanistan. Their efforts earned them the General O’Malley Award – the highest Air Force award for an entire aircrew.
